How to Build Your Perfect Custom Charter Day
Half-day or full? Morning or sunset? Here's how to structure your time on the water so you don't leave wishing you'd done something differently.
The Beautiful Problem
A private charter means total flexibility — and that can feel overwhelming at first. There are no fixed itineraries, no tour bus routes. The day is yours. This guide helps you think through the choices so you arrive with a clear vision and spend every minute of your time on the water doing exactly what you want.
How Long Should You Charter?
The Island Jewel has a 2-hour minimum, but the sweet spot for most guests is 3–4 hours. Here's how to think about it:
2 Hours — The Taster
Enough for a scenic coastal sail, a swim stop, and the essential experience of being out on the open water. Ideal for sunset charters when the goal is ambience over adventure, or for guests with tight schedules.
3 Hours — The Sweet Spot
The most popular option. Time for a proper sail along the Honolulu coastline, an anchor stop to snorkel or swim, relaxing on deck, and a return with no sense of rush. Most first-time guests wish they'd booked at least 3 hours.
4–6 Hours — The Full Day
Room to explore further down the coastline, multiple anchor spots, a meal onboard from the full kitchen, and the kind of genuine disconnection from land that requires hours, not minutes. Ideal for special occasions, families, or anyone who truly wants to unwind.
💡 Our Honest Recommendation
If it's your first time and your budget allows, book 3 hours rather than 2. Almost no one has ever returned to the dock saying "that was too long."
Sample Morning Charter (3 Hours)
- 8:00am — Arrive at Kewalo Basin Slip F11, meet the crew, safety briefing
- 8:15am — Depart. Set sails, feel the trade wind, watch Honolulu's skyline open up behind you
- 8:45am — Cruise past Diamond Head. The morning light on Lē'ahi from the water is extraordinary
- 9:15am — Anchor at a calm snorkel spot. Turtles, tropical fish, crystal-clear water
- 10:00am — Back on deck. Relax, snacks, open water in every direction
- 10:45am — Begin sail back toward Kewalo Basin
- 11:15am — Return to dock
Sample Sunset Charter (2.5 Hours)
- 4:00pm — Depart Kewalo Basin as the afternoon heat softens
- 4:20pm — Sail west along the coastline, Diamond Head behind you, Waikiki in full view
- 5:00pm — Anchor or drift. Open drinks, golden hour begins
- 5:45pm — Sun drops toward the Ko'olau Mountains. The light turns everything amber
- 6:15pm — Begin return as dusk settles. City lights begin to reflect on the water
- 6:30pm — Return to dock
💡 Friday Evening Bonus
Book a Friday sunset charter and stay out past 7:45pm to catch the weekly Hilton Hawaiian Village fireworks show from the water — one of Honolulu's best-kept secrets.
What to Prioritize
Tell Your Crew What Matters Most
- ✓ Wildlife — request a route toward known turtle and dolphin areas
- ✓ Snorkeling — morning departures have the best visibility
- ✓ Photography — golden hour is 45–60 min before sunset
- ✓ Relaxation — ask to anchor in a calm cove and just drift
- ✓ Special occasion — let the crew know in advance so they can help with setup
- ✓ Swimming and jumping — ask for a safe anchor spot with depth
Can You Change Plans Mid-Charter?
Absolutely. That's one of the defining advantages of a private charter. If you spot dolphins and want to follow them for a while — you can. If conditions are better in a different direction — the captain will adjust. The flexibility is the point.
